Loki’s mama, Daisy, was rescued by Equine Angels of the Rockies in 2018 from a kill pen. She was obviously pregnant. Loki made his debut in the world in May of 2018. Sadly, not long after Loki was born, his mama colicked and passed away leaving Loki an orphan.
Loki came to live with us at DreamCatchers in June of 2019 at just over 1 year old. He had all the basics down, haltering, leading, loading in the trailer. Standing for the farrier to trim his feet.
He was entrusted to us to finish his training, have him gelded and teach him further social skills. It was becoming apparent that Loki had some wonky conformation. He was diagnosed with lordosis (sway back) which at his age could only be attributed to genetics. In any other world, this would have been a death sentence for Loki. Most, if not all, ranches and breeders have no time for the “imperfect” ones. They barely have consideration for conformationally correct horses who are past their prime or are not the cream of the crop, shipping hundreds off to sale every year that inevitably end up in the kill buyers lots, as Loki’s mama did.
Today, Loki is a happy healthy young horse that enjoys his days in pasture with the “big” herd. He is learning to wear a harness and pull a cart or wagon. He loves interacting with people and having a job.
Loki will continue his training until the perfect pe
rson/home presents itself. If that never happens, he will remain a valuable member of the DreamCatcher family for life.
